Crazy Ways to Increase Speed for MMA

When it comes to Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) there is nothing more damaging in a fight than a fast fighter. Powerful fighters are fun to watch but if they can't connect they are not deadly; fast fighters will get in and out before you even know what is going on. One of the mottoes at my gym is the following: "I don't have to hit the hardest, all I have to do is hit hard enough to hurt him"
There are a few normal ways to improve your speed and then there are some ways that might be a bit off the wall. If you are willing to let go of your ego and give these a try then you will be on your way to improving your speed.

A good way to increase your balance, range of motion and your speed is to do yoga. Yoga is just not for girls, unlike what you will here from most people. There are many professional football players that do it because it is a great workout for
them. When you increase your range of motion (think flexibility) you are enabling yourself to move quicker from any angle. Also, yoga deals a lot with the core muscles and strengthening them. The reason that this is important is that much of your speed and power comes from having great core strength.
Working out in the water is also a great way to increase your speed. When you get into a pool, you will be able to punch and kick in the water. Because of the additional friction on your body from the water around you, you will move slower. When you get out of the pool after some time you are used to having to use more effort to punch. This will make you much faster than you would normally be.
Learn to juggle. This might be one of the more off the wall idea's to gain speed, however, one of the staples of being quick is having good hand eye coordination. Juggling is a good way for you to improve on your hand eye coordination. It might take a bit for you to learn how to juggle but you will greatly increase your hand eye coordination because of it.
