The Ultimate MMA Strength and Conditioning Program Review – Is it Worth it?

Overview of the Product

The Ultimate MMA Strength and Conditioning is a program created by Eric Wong, a trainer for various UFC fighters, from years of experience and intent study. It is a program that includes a blend of e-books for the theoretical phase and videos for the training phase. This is not a diet book, nor does it include supplements to go with the workouts. The exercises are not meant for body-building but for MMA conditioning, as the name of the program suggests.

The uniqueness of this program versus other known MMA training programs is that
it introduces how “periodization” can actually work for the usually intensive trainings that MMA fighters undergo. Think of the Tabata intervals: you do hardcore workout for a short span, say a few minutes, then rest for a few minutes and continue the workout. Putting it simply, Eric Wong points out that intervals and rest periods for MMA training can prove to be effective ways in MMA conditioning, including fat loss, muscle formation, and general fitness.
It takes on a critical claim that you are able to condition yourself for fighting with only 2 short workouts per week—a tad lesser time than the usual 3 to 5 MMA workouts per week. The program is explained in three video presentations:
  1. Strength—explains the different types of strength and how MMA strength differs from body-building strength.
  2. Cardio—explains how strength and cardio conditioning are not two different entities; in fact, he explains how these two work together.
  3. Periodization—explains how interval methods can be used effectively in MMA conditioning.
You have three options regarding the length of the program: you can choose between 8, 12, and 16 weeks, depending on your preparation time before a fight—or if you are not an MMA fighter, simply how long you can commit to this program.

What Makes This Program a Good Buy

  1. Easy to follow - Eric Wong efficiently explains the theory and science behind the training and workout routines in an easily understandable way—no fancy words or complex scientific terminologies that may confuse you. The program includes exercises that are well-explained through the book and demonstrated clearly in the videos. You can execute the workout with ease, and the program comes with checklists and demonstration to make your training easier.
  2. Convenient to practice - The convenience comes with how the program is designed: 2 short, however intensive, workouts per week. This can fit well to any schedule, especially for those not taking MMA fighting full-time or those simply interested to undergo MMA conditioning.
  3. Comprehensive content - Some positives are that it provides all you need to know about conditioning your body for combat fighting. Blending didactic discussions and video demonstrations are two effective ways that this program utilizes, giving you a feel of a personal training experience without seeing an actual trainer.
  4. Versatile program - Since the program is presented in a straightforward manner, this seems to be an ideal program for beginners. While the program is created for MMA fighters, those who are interested in conditioning their bodies for contact combat can also benefit from this program. The presentations include areas on how you can simply use the techniques for general fitness and not particularly for MMA fighting.
Good value for your money - Spending $77 while being able to get the total MMA-conditioning experience and keeping your body fit is an extremely small investment in my opinion.

What We Don’t Like

  1. Does not come in hard copy format - Digital formats have benefits since they are immediately available and you can save on the costs of shipping. However, books and checklists may be better in hard copy, especially when you do not have the gadgets to operate the program. While the photos seem to portray the program in book format, it does not provide an option to order a hard copy format, you can however print what you need of course.
  2. It is not a complete guide - The program only includes exercises—no tips on nutrition and other factors that can maximize your MMA conditioning. As mentioned, you need to separately purchase the nutritional guides and other bonus inclusions.

The Verdict

The Ultimate MMA Strength and Conditioning Program is a unique and comprehensive guide on how to train to be an MMA fighter. It provides easy-to-follow steps on how to exercise, and it presents the theory behind the exercises to give you a better understanding on why you are doing it. This is an ideal program for beginners and combat sport athletes who are looking for a program that does not take too much time. However, this isn’t a good program for body builders who simply want to bulk up.
