arts, is through the use of effective pain. Effective pain is one that is placed just where the opponent is most vulnerable. MMA, however, is not only about which person can withstand the most pain. Instead, the game is about endurance and technique. Because of this, pain centered strategies such as small joint manipulation are not allowed when it comes to MMA.
Improper clothing
Another mistake to avoid is improper clothing. In general, MMA allows only a pair of MMA gloves and MMA shorts. Not wearing the correct MMA clothing can disqualify you, especially since some people have used clothing to take advantage of a combat situation. Long robes, for instance, can actually be used as a type of shield especially in some traditions of martial arts. Play fair and wear only the regulation clothing.
Excessive damage
If your opponent is already down on the floor and excessively bleeding or showing signs of major damage and injury such as broken bones, you should stop. Keep in mind that victory is not attained in MMA simply through the use of excessive damage. In fact, doing this will only force the referee to break down the fight - which could mean lost momentum for you or a time for the opponent to prepare.
No screening
MMA can be very brutal. Because of this, you should be screened by medical personnel and should have no medical conditions that can be triggered by the game. Keep in mind that staying at the top of health is of utmost importance if you are regularly grappled, thrown on the floor, and if you are fighting with professionals who can perform deadly guillotine chokes on you.
Below the belt
Just as in boxing, there are some moves that are considered below the belt when it comes to MMA. Included in the list are eye gouging, biting, scratching, and hitting the groin area. These are techniques that do not show skill and mastery of any martial art, and are therefore not considered fit and appropriate for MMA.
With a working knowledge of the basic mistakes that should be avoided in mixed martial arts, as well as the proper martial arts gear such as BJJ gear and Muay Thai gear, you can effectively engage in MMA.
